FAQs
1) What kind of training do you offer?
I offer personalized, results-based, balanced training programs tailored to each dog and owner. My methods focus on clear communication, consistency, and balanced techniques that build trust and reliability — whether your goal is better manners, reliable recall, or confidence in challenging environments.
2) What is balanced training?
Balanced training means using both rewards and fair, clear consequences to teach desired behaviours. We focus on rewarding what we want, while addressing unwanted behaviours in a way that makes sense to the dog. It’s about clarity and communication — not punishment.
3) How do I know which program is right for my dog and me?
During our consultation, we’ll discuss your dog’s behaviour, your lifestyle, and your goals. Based on that, I’ll recommend the best fit for you.
4) Is there a difference between an e-collar and a shock collar?
YES! Since the terms are often used interchangeably, many people assume that “e-collar” is just another name for a shock collar. While they may look similar, they’re different in how they work and how they’re used in modern, balanced dog training.
A shock collar is…
an outdated training tool that delivers sudden, sharp, harsh shock.
historically used for punishment rather than training.
harsh, unpredictable and can lead to increased fear and/or stress in dogs.
An e-collar is…
a more refined, nuanced and humane tool (when used correctly).
a training tool that does not use a “shock”
Delivers a low-level, muscle-stimulating sensation — the same type of stimulation used in TENS machines (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation), which are commonly used in human physical therapy to relieve muscle pain.
a training tool with precise and adjustable control — the E-Collar Technologies e-collar has 100 individual levels of stimulation, allowing the handler to find the lowest, most effective level that the dog can feel without causing distress.
At this level, the sensation is often describe as a “tap”, or “tingle”, or “pressure” — not a shock.
Modern E-Collar Training is about COMMUNICATION
When paired with clear training, structure, and positive reinforcement, e-collars can be an incredible tool for off-leash reliability, calm engagement, and improving a dog’s ability to respond in distracting or high-stress or exciting environments.
The key difference lies in how the tool is used — shock collars are associated with harsh correction and punishment, while e-collars (when used properly) are part of a communication system that helps guide your dog into success without confusion, fear, or frustration.
5) Why is the e-collar such an effective tool for dog training?
The e-collar gives you a reliable way to communicate with your dog, even at a distance or around distractions. Because the levels are fully adjustable, it can be tailored to your dog’s individual needs, making training clear, consistent, and fair. When introduced properly, it is not cruel or painful for your dog—it simply creates a gentle, non-emotional signal they understand. This helps build freedom, safety, and confidence for both you and your dog—whether you’re working on recall, leash manners, or off-leash reliability.
6) What is a prong collar?
A prong collar is a communication tool designed to apply even, pressure-based feedback around the dog’s neck. It mimics the natural way dogs correct each other and helps you guide your dog calmly and clearly — especially those who pull or are strong on leash. When used correctly, it does not cause pain, but instead creates clear, consistent communication between you and your dog.
7) How long will it take to see results?
That depends on your dog’s history, your goals, and how much you practice at home. Many owners see improvement after the first few sessions, but lasting change requires consistency and follow-through.
8) How much does training cost?
Prices vary depending on the type of program, the number of sessions, and your dog’s specific needs. I offer different training packages to fit a range of goals. Contact me to set up a free 30-minute phone consultation, and I’ll help you choose the best option for you and your dog.
9) Do you train the dog or do I?
Training is a team effort! I’ll work with your dog, but more importantly, I’ll coach you so you can maintain the training long-term. During our private sessions, we work together hands-on — I demonstrate, guide, and support you as you practice with your dog in real time. After each session, I’ll set you up with realistic, achievable, and comprehensive homework so you can continue the progress between lessons. The goal is for you to become a great leader for your dog!
10) Where do private lessons take place?
Private lessons are typically held in your home and/or out in the real world — wherever your dog struggles most (parks, neighbourhoods, etc.).
11) What if I don’t have a lot of time to train between sessions?
No problem — it’s neither realistic nor productive to spend hours straight training your dog. Instead, I’ll show you how to incorporate short, meaningful training moments into your normal routine. Everyday activities like walks, playtime, or feeding are perfect opportunities to reinforce desired behaviour. The goal is for training to fit seamlessly into your daily life — not take it over.
12) How long are training sessions?
Sessions are typically 45-60 minutes (the first session is sometimes a bit longer), but I adjust slightly based on the dog’s focus and energy.
13) How often should sessions be scheduled?
Weekly or bi-weekly sessions work best to maintain momentum and keep progress consistent.
14) Can you train two dogs at once?
Yes, I’ve worked with several 2-dog households. We’ll start by building each dog’s individual skills, then focus on working them together to improve harmony, structure, and calmness in and/or out of the home.
15) Do you have an hourly rate if I just want one session?
I primarily offer training packages, as behaviour change takes repetition and follow-up. A single session can be helpful for quick guidance or refreshers, but most owners benefit from ongoing coaching.
If you’re a new client, let’s start with a free phone consultation. Contact me to discuss your goals, your dog’s behaviour, and the best plan for success.
If you’re a returning client and just need a refresher or help with specific behaviours, contact me — we can set up a session to get you back on track.
15) What gear/equipment do I need for training?
That depends on the package you choose.
All e-collar packages include the e-collar system.
Some e-collar packages include a prong collar and an elevated training cot.
No matter which package you choose, I recommend having a treat pouch (here’s my favourite one!) and a biothane long line (15–25 ft is sufficient).
A muzzle isn’t included in any package, but I’m happy to help you find the right one and guide you through proper muzzle training.
16) Can older dogs be trained?
Definitely! Dogs of any age can learn with the right structure, motivation, and consistency.
17) Will my dog be fully trained after completing a package?
Training doesn’t end when sessions do — it’s about building habits that last. You’ll leave with the tools and structure to maintain and keep progressing after the program.
18) Do you offer payment plans?
Yes — flexible payment options are available for training packages. We can discuss what works best for you.
19) Can we use the shock collar I already own?
No, I do not use shock collars. We will use a quality e-collar that I’ve tested and can support you with. Some cheaper brands don’t offer the consistency or precision needed for safe training.
20) Is training just for my dog, or will I need to make changes too?
Training is a team effort! Your dog learns best when you also learn how to guide, communicate, and stay consistent. Together, you both grow — and that’s what makes the results last.
